One day, you’re playing with your kid, and the next, they’re off to school. Early childhood education started faster than I originally thought, so imagine my wife and me scrambling to find a pre-K program that still accepted students.
The real struggle, aside from dropping your crying kid off at school, is finding a preschool that provides a safe and nurturing environment. Truthfully, I didn’t realize how tough it was going to be.
But as a parent who looked at a ridiculous number of schools, I know what to look for now. I’m sharing with you the best preschools in Charlotte that earned our trust.
1. Ivybrook Academy

Best For: Short learning periods
Address: 347 N Caswell Rd Suite 101
Contact: (704) 901-8225
Hours: Monday – Friday: 8 am – 5 pm
It was no surprise when Ivybrook Academy made it to our list. It’s one of those pre-schools in Charlotte that parents can trust and kids will love, and there are several reasons for that.
For starters, they focus on short class periods. As a half-day preschool, students won’t get drowned in learning and have more time for tasks and play at home.
Their curriculum also deserves praise, which is a mix of Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and customized assessment. Plus, the preschool program will focus on every age group, ensuring kids can keep up with school tasks.
We also appreciate the small teacher-student ratio for more focused and individualized attention. You should know that since class sizes are small, slots quickly fill up.
It’s also worth noting how they make sure every kid can express themselves, since there’s no uniform in this preschool. Every single action promotes creativity and self-discovery, which we deem important in early childhood.
My son is growing so much in confidence and curiosity
“Ivybrook Academy Myers Park has been amazing for both my son and daughter! The teachers are caring, the environment is nurturing, and my son is growing so much in confidence and curiosity. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a warm, engaging school that makes you part of the family.”

Our daughter is willing to learn and explore all the time
“Ivybrook Academy is a Montessori and Reggio Emilia curriculum. We’ve seen such a change in our daughter for the best since enrolling her in this school. She is so confident, outgoing, bright, and engaging. Willing to learn and explore all the time! The Myers Park location is beautiful and the staff treats us and my daughter like family. We love Ivybrook and so happy we’ve found this school for our growing family.”

2. Primrose Preschool of South Charlotte

Best For: Structured and supportive learning
Address: 15933 Lancaster Hwy
Contact: (704) 426-3652
Hours: Monday – Friday: 6:30 am – 6 pm
Working parents will find Primrose Preschool of South Charlotte a good fit for their family. This place operates as a preschool and daycare in one through their after-school care program, which is perfect for busy families.
A highlight is their program called Balanced Learning, which blends nurturing guidance and purposeful play. It basically encourages social, physical, and creative growth that will keep students happy and active in class.
We also like how this Charlotte preschool provides a smooth transition for kids, as they welcome infants to preschool. It truly impressed us, since they have a program for every stage, even for kids whose birthdays missed the kindergarten eligibility window.
In addition, the summer and after-school programs can keep the students’ minds active and healthy once school’s out. Honestly, many parents liked how the preschool has nurtured their kids, both in academics and social skills.
They’re quite expensive, though. But for the quality of day-to-day activities, we understand their tuition fees.
Balance between nurturing care and structured learning
“What I liked most about our experience at Primrose was the balance between nurturing care and structured learning. The curriculum was thoughtfully designed and developmentally appropriate, and I really appreciated the emphasis on character development and social-emotional skills. The teachers were caring, communicative, and genuinely invested in our child’s growth.”

The staff is incredible
“The Primrose of South Charlotte staff is incredible. We’ve been there for 3 years now, with all three of our girls going through the program. We know the girls are getting the best education possible for their age, and are loved and taken care of by the staff.”

3. Brighter Minds Academy 2, LLC

Best For: Play-based learning
Address: 407 Norris Ave
Contact: (980) 201-9701
Hours: Monday – Friday: 6:30 am – 6 pm
The program at Brighter Minds Academy 2, LLC, combines preschool and daycare. Overall, this setup is ideal and super helpful for busy parents searching for academic and mental support for their kids.
The preschool welcomes infants to 12-year-olds, where students receive a customized curriculum. We also love how it adds activities that nurture a safe, fun, and creative environment through play-based learning.
What’s outstanding is that the curriculum is age-appropriate, where each student can learn to be independent and confident through unstructured playtime. We’ve seen massive improvements during our surveys, where kids actually enjoyed school.
Plus, the parents we spoke with had only good things to say about their experience here. The teachers encouraged them to be involved, and they could visit the school anytime, as long as their child was present.
The outdoor playtime is a good thing, but we’re probably being nitpicky in hoping that the school fence could be a bit higher. Nonetheless, the students here are always monitored through video security and updates using the school app.
An entire blessing to my girls and me
“The staff at Brighter Minds have been an entire blessing to me and my girls. Moving from a different state and finding good child care and trustworthy child care is hard and I found them my girls tell me every other day ” Mommy I had a good day ” Ms. Kesha and her team are family , and family that I am beyond blessed to have found.”

4. MECK Pre-K

Best For: Free pre-K learning
Address: 601 E 5th St #200 (complete list of centers)
Contact: (704) 943-9585
Hours: Monday – Friday: 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
Families in Charlotte can try out Meck Pre-K, a free program for 4-year-olds in Mecklenburg County. Yes, it’s completely free because it’s funded by the county.
There are lots of locations in Charlotte (over 40!), making them highly accessible. For your peace of mind, all these are licensed child development centers and are taught by licensed teachers.
We find this a good setup for children before they officially enter kindergarten, as it follows the research-based Creative Curriculum, which combines hands-on learning and real-life skills to nurture academic and physical skills.
Incredibly, the maximum class size is only up to 18 kids in the room, even as a free program. School runs for 6.5 hours each day (which equals a full day), and we find it packed full of activities (like arts and crafts) without overwhelming the children.
We appreciate the county’s early childhood program, especially since it offers transportation and after-school activities for a small fee. Not all locations do, however, but it’s fine since they remain an affordable preschool in the Charlotte area.
They really engage with the students and parents
“I have had a great experience with Meck pre- K my son attended bright future learning center charlotte, NC he has learned so much and the school was very good with keeping the parents involved. I absolutely love his teachers Mrs. Tee Tee and Mrs. Smith they are awesome they really engage with the students and parents. My son can read on his own at 5 years old he sounds out the words and everything, one day I heard him reading big words and it brought tears to my eyes I’m just so grateful to his teachers and the school. Meck Pre-K has been such a great program for My son.”

A nurturing and academically strong start for a child
“Both of my boys have gone through Meck Pre-K at Cadence Academy-Northlake, and it has been an amazing experience. They are two years apart, and I’ve seen consistent, positive growth in both of them. The teachers are well-prepared and truly help set a strong foundation for kindergarten. I especially appreciate how Meck Pre-K encourages parent involvement with opportunities to volunteer and attend classroom presentations. I highly recommend Meck Pre-K to any family looking for a nurturing and academically strong start for their child.”

5. Chesterbrook Academy

Best For: Structured academic environment
Address: 8411 Beverly Crest Blvd
Contact: (877) 454-1768
Hours: Monday – Friday: 7 am – 6 pm
Chesterbrook Academy, which has a couple of locations in Charlotte, has been around since 1985, so you’re getting a tried-and-tested curriculum. It basically prepares the students for elementary school.
To give you an idea, they use Links to Learning, an age-appropriate curriculum with a focus on education and growth. It’s a mix of learning, creativity, and life skills, which are the perfect blend to nurture growth and confidence.
Many parents have trusted this early childhood center in Charlotte, even enrolling all their kids for preschool. We weren’t surprised at all, since their focus on social-emotional, literacy, and center-based education welcomes self-paced learning.
However, expect a not-so-affordable tuition fee. Then again, your child’s getting exactly what you pay for, because the school is secure, well-maintained, and has an overall fun environment.
Most importantly, the parents we conversed with loved the progress updates through the school app. Honestly, we appreciate the teachers for encouraging parents to be involved.
My daughter has learned so much
“My daughter has been at Chesterbrook for a year now. We changed because her other daycare was not teaching her anything and constantly moving her to different classroom based on the staff availability. Since she’s been at Chesterbrook, she has learned SO much, looks forward to going to school and has made a lot of friends. She is now in the PreK2 class with Miss Jennifer. She is seriously THE BEST teacher. My daughter loves her so much. She has such fun lesson plans, gives homework and is so organized u love also that she has the best communication with us parents.”
