Top 5 Psychologists in Charlotte That’ll Sort Out What’s on Your Mind

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Experience & Qualifications - The first thing we checked was if the psychologist had top-notch credentials and plenty of experience working with various mental health conditions.

Communication Skills - We paid close attention to how well they listened and explained things; it’s important that you feel understood and comfortable opening up during sessions.

Availability - Finding help when you actually need it matters, so we looked for psychologists who offer flexible appointment times and don’t keep you waiting for months.

Patient Care - We made sure these professionals are genuinely invested in their patients’ well-being, looking for those who offer a supportive atmosphere and individualized treatment plans designed to help you thrive.

Life throws a lot at us, and sometimes our minds feel like they’re running on a never-ending hamster wheel. If you’ve ever wished you had someone in your corner to help make sense of it all, you’re definitely not alone.

That’s where a great psychologist comes in. They’re not just there for heavy stuff—sometimes it’s just about having someone help untangle those day-to-day thoughts.

We went digging to find some psychologists in Charlotte who really get it, whether you’re dealing with sky-high stress or just need a mental tune-up. Check out here the ones who can help give your mind a little breathing room!

How much does it cost to see a psychologist in Charlotte?

In Charlotte, the cost to see a psychologist typically ranges from $85 to $225 per session, depending on the provider and session length. Lower-cost options can start at $40, while specialized assessments and experienced clinicians may charge up to $375 per session.
However, do note that initial intake evaluations for psychologists in Charlotte usually cost around $250 to $300.

Chad Kraska, Psy.D., is the founder of Genesis Clinical Services, and he’s really hard to overlook. Dr. Kraska brings over 20 years of hands-on experience, and people appreciate his genuine, down-to-earth approach.

Genesis isn’t just about quick diagnoses—it’s clear they’re in it for the long haul, building lasting relationships with families. A lot of clients highlighted this and added how Dr. Kraska makes sure they truly understand their strengths and challenges.

They’re big on strength-based, practical assessments, and the team takes care to translate those results into plans you can actually use.

Furthermore, the atmosphere at Genesis is very welcoming. We also commend Jeniffer (the insurance expert) for helping take the edge off what could otherwise be a pretty overwhelming experience.

They get extra points for being open about the assessment process. The main drawback we kept hearing, though, is that the assessments’ price is a bit higher than that of some other clinics in the area.

Pros

  • Highly experienced psychologist
  • Strength-based, practical assessments
  • Welcoming and supportive staff
  • Clear communication
  • Ongoing support after assessment
  • Insurance expertise available

Cons

  • Assessment fees are above average

Comprehensive evaluations with care

“Dr. Kraska and his staff were professional and understanding of the challenges we are experiencing.  They took the time to answer my questions and provided a comprehensive evaluation with practical recommendations for home and school.”

“This is the best place to go, with people I highly recommend, for the right help and testing you need. I’d recommend this place to anyone.”

Lainey Butler, Ph.D., at ChangeWell Psych brings a strong background—earning her doctorate at UNC Wilmington, spending time in research and clinical environments, and actively publishing on topics like adolescent substance use and suicidality.

Her style is centered around relational and evidence-based work, and you’ll quickly notice she relies on proven methods like ACT, DBT, and CBT in sessions.

We were glad that she is committed to working with the LGBTQIA+ community and folks struggling with body image, eating disorders, and other tough-to-navigate experiences.

Many people we’ve heard from highlight Lainey’s clear communication and her ability to break down complex concepts in ways that just make sense, with ongoing support and a very thorough intake process.

If we had to point out one potential downside, it’d be that rare report about a last-minute session cancellation without notice. But it sounds like that’s more the exception than the rule, considering the positive feedback overall.

Pros

  • Deep clinical experience
  • Research background
  • Relational, evidence-based therapeutic approach
  • Specializes in LGBTQIA+ and body image issues
  • A diverse range of counseling services
  • Clear communication
  • Ongoing client support

Cons

  • Occasional session cancellation

Inclusive, supportive care

“ChangeWell is a place of inclusivity for anyone seeking therapy. Their clinicians are knowledgeable, supportive and provide evidenced based therapy to help people achieve their goals. You’ll be met with respect and kindness as they understand the huge step you’re taking in seeking out therapy. Happy to recommend them to people I know and care about because I know they’ll get quality services by clinicians that care.”

Dr. Lisa Long & Associates has a virtual model that genuinely streamlines the process—no doubt. Their setup is all-online, and what’s different is how they use a specially designed intake form—put together by Dr. Long and Dr. Ryba—to dig deep into your life story.

It’s not a generic checklist, so when you get to your video session, Dr. Long already knows your background and concerns. We like that they don’t rush you either; your initial interview is a full two hours, so you actually get to talk without being cut off.

After your interview, Dr. Ryba independently goes through everything, and she and Dr. Long hash out your case together before you even get your feedback.

It’s indeed a collaborative angle that seems to catch things a single evaluator might overlook, and previous clients point out how thorough—and prompt—the feedback is.

On the downside, this isn’t the place for you if you’re set on in-person sessions. Add to that, they don’t take insurance, which may be a dealbreaker for some.

The good thing is that Dr. Long provides detailed receipts so you can pursue reimbursement from your insurance company.

Pros

  • Fully virtual, nationwide service
  • In-depth, custom intake assessments
  • Dual-expert evaluation
  • Comprehensive two-hour video sessions
  • Prompt, collaborative diagnostic process
  • Immediate post-interview review and planning
  • Supportive communication

Cons

  • No in-person sessions
  • Does not accept insurance (only provides Superbill)

Attentive expertise

“Dr. Lisa is the best! I needed an expedited evaluation in a short amount of time. She got me in for an appointment same day and was really professional, caring, and carefully listened to everything i said. I highly recommend Dr. Lisa!”

Omar Hernandez, Google Review

Transformative support

“Dr. Long is compassionate , warm and understanding.  She relates to her patients and makes you feel like you are talking to an old friend. She has changed my outlook on life and I would not be in the place I am today without her guidance and support. She is has a gift and a passion for what she does.”
