Top 5 Storage Spaces in Charlotte That Make Room for Life’s Messes

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Size and Layout - First things first, we checked if each storage space offered a variety of unit sizes and layouts. This is so you can have options, whether you’re stashing a few boxes or your entire apartment.

Accessibility - We made sure the best places let you grab your stuff when you need it. We looked for extended hours (or even 24/7 access!) and easy drive-up options.

Security - We prioritized facilities with solid security—think surveillance cameras, well-lit locations, and gated entry.

Customer Service - We paid special attention to friendly, helpful staff and clear policies to make the whole process as smooth as possible.

Nobody likes clutter, but surprisingly, it has a way of sneaking up on all of us, right? And if your closets are bursting and you can’t even remember what’s under your bed, you’re definitely not alone.

Good news: Charlotte’s got a bunch of awesome storage spaces ready to rescue your living room (and your sanity). But here’s the thing—not all of them are created equal.

Some make storing your stuff a total breeze, while others can leave you wishing you just kept everything in the garage. That’s why we’ve listed here the best storage spaces in Charlotte that’ll help you declutter without letting go. Read on!

How much do storage spaces cost in Charlotte?

In Charlotte, you can expect to pay anywhere from $31 to $141 per month for a storage space, depending on the size and amenities you need. For example, a popular 10×10 unit averages around $71 monthly, with smaller units starting as low as $12.

Extra Space Storage’s location is right near the Archdale intersection, which means you don’t have to wrestle traffic for ages. Speaking of location, they have several branches in Charlotte, so clients can choose the best spot near home.

Now, they offer a seriously wide range when it comes to unit sizes and layouts, from tiny climate-controlled lockers to massive, multi-door units with drive-up access. Plus, they even handle outdoor parking for big stuff like RVs and boats!

Another cool thing is their focus on security (gated entry, cameras, and well-lit grounds) and convenience, including the option for 24/7 access if you ever need it.

Furthermore, booking online is easy, and potential clients can lock in web-only rates. They also have “First Month Free” or “$1 for the first month” promotions, and also options for both ground-floor and upper-level spaces.

They also sell packing supplies onsite and offer tech-friendly features like app-based gate access! One thing to keep in mind, though, is that a few long-term renters did comment about rental rates creeping up over time, which isn’t the best surprise.

Pros

  • Wide size options
  • Climate-controlled units
  • App-based access
  • Clean facilities
  • Secure and gated
  • Convenient multiple locations
  • Packing supplies onsite

Cons

  • Rapid rent increases

Outstanding customer service

“I’m a current renter and needed another unit for more stuff. If it was not for April at the front office I don’t think I would have done it. She was patient, so helpful. Very informative. It’s rare in today’s work place to have good customer service. Truly appreciate her. Thank you April.”

Storage Rentals of America’s whole setup is about saying, “Do things your way.” With them, clients have the option to reserve or rent a unit online, by phone, or just by popping into the office, making it hassle-free.

What we especially liked on our walk-through was the range of unit sizes: basic 5x5s, a bunch of climate-controlled choices, and even those big drive-up spaces for anyone with “just one more thing from the garage.”

Everything felt clean and decently maintained, plus there’s a full stash of packing supplies at the front, so last-minute box emergencies are covered.

Security gets a thumbs-up, too—gate entry, video cameras everywhere, and things are well-lit with bright LED lights, which adds peace of mind.

The location isn’t hard to find, either (big plus for anyone on the move), and for anyone storing a car, boat, or RV, dedicated spaces are available.

When we spoke with a couple of their regulars, most liked the convenience and respectful staff. That said, a few people rolled their eyes at the insurance upsells.

Pros

  • Flexible leases
  • Variety of sizes
  • Enhanced security
  • Climate-controlled units
  • Convenient location
  • Onsite supplies

Cons

  • Pushy upsells

University Storage Charlotte manages to keep things simple with a wide selection of indoor units. Every single one they have is climate-controlled, so humidity and temperature issues are off the table (a lifesaver for anyone storing sensitive items).

Security is definitely above average, thanks to electronic keypad access and round-the-clock cameras.

Plus, the fact that rentals can be handled completely contactless means the whole process is stress-free. We love that there are no paperwork headaches or waiting for someone to open the front door!

Billing is transparent and flexible, with online payments, EZ Pay auto-billing, and totally paperless options. We even appreciated their online storage calculator, which can actually help pinpoint a unit size before committing.

Storage supplies are always in stock as well, from locks to packing materials, so there’s no need to run elsewhere.

Property coverage is required here, but customers can use their homeowners or renters insurance to waive the protection fee.

For starters, reserving a space at Public Storage is totally stress-free—no deposit or credit card required, which is great for anyone still sorting out moving plans.

As for the facility itself, there’s a surprising variety—small lockers, big climate-controlled units, straightforward drive-up access, and even larger spots for RVs or business stuff.

We were happy to see that the whole place is well-kept, with regular pest checks and super tidy, well-lit hallways. Those climate-controlled options are a bonus if heat and humidity are a concern.

We also noticed they’re pretty big on convenience; they’ve got an online eRental thing where you head straight to your unit and skip the counter. Packing supplies at the front desk are another practical touch—boxes, tape, and locks, all reasonably priced.

Unfortunately, a few regulars mentioned that the staff sometimes vanish midday, which can hold things up for new renters or folks with questions.

  • Wide size options
  • Climate-controlled units
  • Vehicle/RV storage
  • Clean facilities
  • Strong security
  • Easy online rental
  • No-commitment reservations

SmartStop Self Storage covers all the must-haves—climate control, wide driveways that make hauling stuff less of a headache, and around-the-clock video surveillance.

Their line-up of units is huge! We saw everything from small closet-sized spaces to large, garage-style units.

The online size guide makes picking easier than expected, and the manager is good at helping people figure out what fits best, especially if downsizing or handling a move.

We were impressed by the secure setup, too. Entry and exit are electronic, and the perimeter fence, plus an on-site manager, add a real assurance—not just empty promises.

The handy app also lets renters handle access and payments with zero fuss—definitely a win in our book! Deals like up to 50% off and the first month free are a nice bonus; military folks can snag extra discounts.

Clients who’ve rented here like the flexibility with month-to-month options and long gate hours, but a few flagged some staff as rude and dismissive.

Pros

  • Wide unit variety
  • 24/7 surveillance
  • Electronic gate access
  • On-site resident manager
  • Online reservations
  • Move-in specials
  • Military discounts
