We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Quality of Service - We looked for animal hospitals with experienced veterinarians and staff who treat pets with skill and care, making sure each visit is thorough and reassuring.

Facilities - We chose places that are well-equipped with modern medical technology, clean waiting areas, and comfy spaces for both pets and their owners.

Accessibility - We made sure the hospitals have convenient hours, flexible appointment options, and are easy to get to, whether you’re coming in for a routine check-up or a last-minute emergency.

Empathy - We picked clinics where the team goes the extra mile to comfort anxious pets (and their worried humans) and truly listens to your concerns.

Carolina Veterinary Specialists is absolutely a name that pops up time and again among local pet owners. Here, they can handle every tricky case, be it complicated surgery or a rare diagnosis, thanks to their onsite board-certified specialists.

They’re decked out with enough high-tech equipment to make any pet parent breathe a little easier. In fact, they have an in-house lab that churns out test results at a speed we’ve honestly come to appreciate.

Another thing that’s a lifesaver is the on-site pharmacy. Because of these, we’ve seen a lot of grateful clients walk out with everything their pet needs, from meds to follow-up instructions, all in one go.

Furthermore, payments and financing are straightforward, too. However, not everyone feels the warm fuzzies; a few pet parents have told us they wish staff were a little more empathetic during high-stress emergencies.

That said, it’s hard to overlook just how reliable and skilled the team is, especially when it comes to serious medical issues.

Pros

  • Board-certified specialists
  • Advanced diagnostic
  • 24/7 emergency use
  • In-house lab
  • Financing options
  • Wide range of specialties

Cons

  • Occasionally cold staff

Caring staff

“Brought my boy Horatio in,  he wasn’t doing well and the Urgent Vet in Gastonia was zero help.  Though they did refer me here and I’m glad for that.  Despite the wait with little communication initially they did take good care of my boy, and kept him safe after a possible poison ingestion.

Emergency price was high but average for the service by comparison. Should anything happen to either of my lil ones I would feel confident bringing them here in the future.”

Prompt updates

“My dog had a very scary few months and needed urgent care and 2 blood transfusions.  The staff kept me updated all the way and continue to help me with my precious Mr.Sparkle.  The specialists here are amazing and my dog loves the care he is receiving.  As a pet Momma, I’m super happy to recommend this your go to spot for your pet.”

We’re suckers for good layouts, and we loved learning that VEG ER has a whole open floor pant setup. With that, pet parents don’t just watch from a distance; they actually get to stay right by their animal’s side all through the visit!

They aren’t kidding about being open to all animals, either. While dogs and cats definitely make up most of the patients, we’ve seen everything from rabbits to birds and even some exotics being cared for here.

The lineup of emergency surgeries they tackle is genuinely impressive, by the way. Things like foreign body removal, scary stomach (GDV) cases, and pyometra surgeries are all in a day’s work.

Furthermore, the facility itself is open 24/7, and the technology is on point with fast access to endoscopy, ultrasounds, and X-rays. Plus, an in-house blood bank for dog transfusions, which feels like a rare resource!

Sadly, some pet parents told us they felt there was a push toward extra tests and treatments. But still, they can’t say enough about the communication and care they received from the staff.

Pros

  • Open floor plan
  • 24/7 availability
  • All-animal care
  • On-site blood bank
  • Advanced diagnostic
  • Transparent communication

Cons

  • Upselling concerns

Supportive team

“We can’t say enough about our experience at VEG today. Our 10 year old doodle ate steel wool and the staff at VEG was supportive, walked us through every detail and went through each non-invasive option to get him okay considering his age. He was back home within hours thanks to their quick work! We could tell that every pet under their care was treated like their own pets which is rare! Thank you to all the drs and vet technicians that helped get our Beau back okay!!!”

Prompt care

“My sweet dog went into respiratory distress on a Saturday night. I called ahead and rushed him to VEG. They took him right in and immediately assessed his situation. Late stage heart disease. The Dr. was so compassionate and thorough. Everyone on staff was amazing for a very difficult situation. We discussed options. They allowed us to sit with out beloved pet until the rest of the family arrived. We chose to put him down. They prepped a private room where we held our baby and said goodbye. When we were ready the Dr. came in and professionally dispatched our baby. This team made a very sad and difficult event tolerable. Thank you, We appreciate you.”

Animal Medical Hospital & Urgent Care is one of our recommendations, especially after realizing how many of our friends trust their pets to this hospital. They’ve been AAHA-accredited since 1984, which sets the expectation that every corner is spotless and every protocol feels serious.

The services lineup covers everything from standard checkups and dental work to surgery and specialist care. We’re always impressed by how seamless it is—lab tests, X-rays, and ultrasounds all under one roof, so there’s no running around.

And honestly, the bonus of boarding and grooming makes it tempting to do it all in one trip. Plus, their Camp AMH is a hit for both dogs and cats, and it’s nice to know they offer medical boarding for special-needs pets!

On the flip side, urgent visits are appointment-based, so no rolling in at the last minute. Still, for a mix of long-standing expertise, wide-ranging services, and a genuinely caring team, it’s hard to beat AMH.

Pros

  • Longstanding accreditation
  • Comprehensive services
  • On-site diagnostics
  • Medical boarding
  • Grooming options
  • Convenient location

Cons

  • Appointment-only urgent care

Caring team

“I took my cat, Winifred, to animal medical hospital and immediately knew I made the right choice. I especially enjoyed my vet tech, Ashley. She took great care of cleaning my cat’s ears and soothed any of my anxieties. My vet, Dr. Oberst, took her time with Winifred and answered all of my questions. I was also very impressed that when my cat had to go to the emergency hospital they called me when they received her records to check in on me. I feel extremely thankful to have found such an amazing office to take care of my fur baby.”

Thorough consultation

“This was our second visit to the Animal Hospital. Both visits were for ultrasounds for our cat. Every time we felt absolutely comfortable with how Dr. Bishop and his assistant Kristyn took care of our cat. Dr. Bishop really takes his time to explain everything, always asks if we had questions and we trust him completely. Kristyn is also wonderful, she takes great care taking our baby to treatments and always explains the medications and what to do at home. We are so happy that we got referred to this hospital. The staff at the reception is also wonderful, friendly and polite.”

Commonwealth Animal Hospital has really nailed that perfect balance between professional care and that laid-back neighborhood vibe. Every time we’ve swung by or called with a question, there’s never that rushed feeling—other pet parents echoed this.

The range of services feels almost all-inclusive: regular nose-to-tail wellness checks, dental care, surgery, diagnostics, all the way to fracture repair, and advanced treatments. Plus, they also offer pet boarding that always puts owners at ease when travel pops up.

Furthermore, their on-site equipment is state-of-the-art, so there’s no shuffling between clinics for X-rays or scanning. And the 24/7 pet portal is a definite perk, since having medical records on hand makes everything simpler.

The only hiccup is that Commonwealth isn’t open for emergencies 24/7. The good thing is that pet owners say their team is quick to respond over the phone and quickly directs them to trusted emergency clinics nearby.

Pros

  • Advanced diagnostic
  • Convenient pet portal
  • Skilled staff
  • On-site boarding

Cons

  • No 24/7 emergency

Thorough explanations

“Best vet we’ve ever been to. Shortly after I moved to Charlotte, my cat Palmer started showing signs of a UTI and I went into full panic mode as it was a Friday before a holiday weekend, I didn’t expect to get in anywhere and I hadn’t established a new vet yet, but we were able to come in same day! Ever since then, my two cats Palmer and Pluto have seen Dr. Fisher who is so wonderful. I am always so anxious bringing them to the vet, but she always explains everything so thoroughly, answers all of my questions, is so kind and honest, and I never feel like I’m being rushed in any way. I’m happy to know my cats are in such great care with the whole team here. Couldn’t say enough kind words!”

Informative check-up

“I was a walk in and was able to be seen on the spot. From the desk to the check up, it was a phenomenal experience. The desk clerk was very informative and patient, she helped me get a room on the spot, and was very polite. The vet tech was spectacular. She was extremely sweet, super informative, and was easy to be with. I was seen by Dr. Keb and had a very pleasant experience.  Again, was super informative and patient with me and my dog. Overall I had a 10/10 experience with the entire staff. Additionally, I feel like I was quoted very fairly and they were very transparent about everything.”

We thought CARE was just another ER, but then found out they’ve got all kinds of specialists—cardiology, surgery, neurology, even an eye doctor for pets—all working under one roof.

Aside from that, we noticed that the staff were super approachable and never made us feel rushed. The vibe is definitely less “cold clinic” and more “hotel lobby”.

Separate waiting areas for dogs and cats are another great touch, especially when nerves are running high. The Silent Partner Fund is another thing clients rave about.

We’ve chatted with a couple of folks who said it meant the difference between saying yes and no to a life-saving treatment for their pets.

On the flip side, since they welcome walk-ins around the clock, it can end up feeling like a really long wait if the place is packed. But honestly, with the expertise and heart on display, most people don’t mind the line.

Pros

  • 24/7 availability
  • Cat/dog separation
  • Comfortable amenities
  • Financial assistance
  • Wide service range

Cons

  • Long waits
  • Busy during peak

Incredibly caring staff

“Dr. Hensarling and Becky went above and beyond in providing my furry family member with compassion, care, and responsiveness. They are absolutely the best! My first time at an emergency veterinary facility, I was pleasantly impressed by the organization and priorities of this place. The staff is incredibly caring and attentive, and it’s evident that your pet’s well-being is everyone’s top concern.”

Clear communication

“Hi CARE team! Reaching out here so everyone will see it – a month ago, on Christmas, you all saved this sweet girls life. For the week she was with you, you communicated clearly and with kindness and tact, your doctors and nurses – all of them – knew Honey, her case, everything. You made what was a horrific situation feel as safe as it could’ve felt. Thank you from us & our girl – and for the review portion: I will now only take my pets to CARE in emergency situations. The cost is no joke – but they make it very clear that it’s worth every penny spent.”
